For generations, Black women have been lauded for their strength. We have been celebrated as the pillars of our families, the backbones of our communities, and the untiring workers who can carry any burden without breaking. From an early age, many of us absorb an unspoken narrative, a subterranean frequency that whispers: To survive, you must struggle. To be worthy, you must endure.
This internalised imperative has created what I call the “struggle gene.” It is not a biological reality, but rather an intergenerational energetic imprint. It is a protective mechanism born from historical necessity, forged in environments where hyper-vigilance was essential for survival. Yet, while this mindset once kept our ancestors alive, carrying it into the present moment keeps us in a perpetual state of spiritual and physical depletion.
True abundance cannot root itself in soil that is constantly prepared for battle. To enter into a state of authentic wealth, financial, emotional, and spiritual, we must learn to soften. We must give ourselves permission to release the heavy armour of constant resilience and step into a sacred space of ease, reception, and ancestral alignment.
The Architecture of the Struggle Gene
The struggle gene manifests in subtle, everyday ways. It is present when you feel an overwhelming sense of guilt for simply resting. It shows up when receiving help feels uncomfortable, or when you automatically assume that anything worth having must come through extreme labor, exhaustion, or suffering.
From a perspective rooted in Yoruba cosmology and African diasporic traditions, this hyper-vigilance disrupts our sacred balance. When we operate entirely within a survival framework, we exist in a state of spiritual tension. We disconnect from our divine feminine essence, the energy of creation, fluid reception, intuition, and grace.
- Hyper-independence: The belief that asking for support is a sign of vulnerability or weakness.
- Over-functioning: Taking on emotional and logistical burdens that belong to others, often at the expense of your own well-being.
- Scarcity conditioning: Operating from a fear that resources, opportunity, or love are strictly limited, leading to constant anxiety about the future.
- Guilt around ease: Feeling as though you must continuously earn your right to exist through labor and struggle.
Releasing this gene is not about abandoning our strength. It is about converting that strength from an involuntary survival strategy into a conscious, peaceful choice.
Phase One: The Remembering
The journey back to ease begins with The Remembering. Before we can transform our relationship with wealth and struggle, we must trace the origin of these patterns back through our lineage.
Many of our mothers, grandmothers, and great-grandmothers did not have the privilege to soften. They navigated systemic barriers, economic marginalisation, and societal pressure that rendered hyper-vigilance necessary. When we observe their lives through a lens of compassion rather than judgment, we begin to understand that their survival strategies were acts of profound love for us. They carried the heavy loads so that we might one day have the freedom to put them down.
The Remembering is an invitation to sit with your lineage and honor their sacrifices without repeating their pain. It is the realization that your ancestors do not require your continued suffering as proof of your devotion. On the contrary, your joy, your ease, and your unburdened prosperity are the ultimate fulfillment of their prayers.
To practice The Remembering in your daily life:
- Acknowledge the origin: When you feel the impulse to overwork or resist help, pause and ask yourself, Is this fear mine, or am I carrying the unspoken fear of those who came before me?
- Create an ancestral space: Dedicate a quiet corner of your home to honor your lineage. A simple glass of clear water, a white candle, and a moment of quiet reflection can establish a sacred connection with those who walk with you.
- Reframe your story: Shift your narrative from “I must survive” to “I am the living expression of my ancestors’ highest aspirations.”
Phase Two: The Unveiling
Once we remember where these patterns originate, we enter The Unveiling. This phase requires us to look clearly at the internal conditioning, false beliefs, and emotional blocks that obscure our innate capacity to receive.
Wealth is fundamentally an energy of circulation. When your physical body is held in chronic tension and your mind is locked in a survival state, your energetic capacity to receive is restricted. The Unveiling asks us to uncover the specific ways we push abundance away out of a misplaced habit of self-protection.
Consider how you react when abundance, praise, or assistance enters your life. Do you deflect compliments? Do you feel anxious when money enters your account, immediately waiting for the next financial crisis to occur? These reactions are indicators of a nervous system tuned to the frequency of struggle.
Softening into wealth requires retraining your nervous system to view safety not in constant defense, but in openness and ease.
Unveiling these dynamics allows you to interrupt the habit of struggle. It provides the clarity needed to choose peace over chaotic labor, and ease over unnecessary hardship.
Phase Three: The Reclaiming
The final stage of this sacred transformation is The Reclaiming. Having remembered your lineage and unveiled your internal blocks, you now step into your power with grace, clarity, and sovereignty.
Reclaiming true wealth means aligning yourself with the abundance that is your birthright. In Yoruba cosmology, wealth is not merely measured by material accumulation; it encompasses Aje (the energy of commerce and prosperity), Ilafe (contentment), and Alaafia (peace of mind). True wealth means having the resources to thrive, the health to enjoy them, and the tranquility to remain present in your life.
When a Black woman softens into wealth, her presence transforms her entire ecosystem. She becomes a living sanctuary, demonstrating to her children, her peers, and her community that prosperity does not demand the sacrifice of one’s soul or body.
Here are grounded practices to cultivate this state of Reclaiming:
- Embrace Sacred Rest: Treat rest not as a reward for hard work, but as a fundamental requirement for spiritual alignment and creative power.
- Practice Open Reception: When help, gifts, or opportunities are offered, accept them with a simple “Thank you.” Resist the urge to immediately promise something in return or justify why you receive it.
- Align with Sacred Ritual: Incorporate intentional practices into your routine, such as ritual baths with traditional herbs like basil, honey, and white flowers, to clear lingering survival tension and anchor feelings of sweetness and abundance.
- Redefine Success: Measure your success not by how much you can endure, but by how deeply you permit yourself to experience peace, joy, and fulfillment.
Stepping Into Your Birthright
Releasing the “struggle gene” is an act of deep spiritual courage. It requires you to step away from the familiar comfort of constant effort and step into the unfamiliar terrain of trust, reception, and grace.
You were not brought here merely to endure, to clear hurdles, or to survive. You were placed on this earth to embody the richness of your heritage, to walk in dignity, and to experience the full spectrum of divine abundance. As you soften your shoulders, release the need to control every outcome, and open your heart to receive, you honor both the ancestral wisdom behind you and the generations that will follow in your steps.
Let this be your moment of surrender, not to defeat, but to the overwhelming peace and prosperity that have always belonged to you.
