In our fast-paced, modern world, we are often very diligent about our physical hygiene. We wouldn’t dream of going days without a shower or forgetting to brush our teeth. We understand that physical dirt accumulates and needs to be washed away for our health and comfort. However, we often forget that we possess an energetic body that requires just as much regular maintenance.
In the Yoruba tradition, we understand that we are constantly interacting with the energies of people, places, and situations. Just as dust settles on a shelf, “energetic debris” can settle on our spirit, leaving us feeling heavy, confused, or disconnected from our true selves.
This is where the concept of spiritual hygiene becomes vital. It is not merely about “feeling good” in the moment. It is a fundamental practice of maintaining what we call Ìwàpẹ̀lé, or balanced, good character.
To walk through the world with grace and to fulfill our divine purpose, our inner vessel must be clear. When our energy is cluttered, our character suffers, and our connection to our ancestors and the Divine becomes muffled.
Understanding the Need for Spiritual Cleansing
Think of your spirit as a clear window. Over time, the “rain” of daily stress, the “wind” of other people’s negative emotions, and the “smog” of societal pressure create a film over that glass. Eventually, you can’t see the sun clearly, and the world looks grey.
In my work with Fematin958 Intl, I often see women who are carrying burdens that aren’t even theirs. They are carrying the unhealed grief of their mothers, the silenced frustrations of their grandmothers, and the collective trauma of our history.
This is what we address in The Remembering phase of our journey. We start to recognise that the “heaviness” we feel isn’t a personal failing, it is often a sign that our spiritual skin needs a thorough wash.
Spiritual hygiene is the act of consciously removing these external influences. It allows us to move into The Unveiling, where we can finally see who we are beneath the layers of conditioning and trauma. Without a clear energetic field, it is very difficult to hear the whispers of your intuition or the guidance of your ancestors.
The Foundation of Ìwàpẹ̀lé
The beauty of Yoruba cosmology is that it is deeply practical. Spiritual growth is not an abstract concept, it is reflected in how we show up in the world. Ìwàpẹ̀lé is often translated as “gentle character” or “good character.” It is the highest aim of a human being.
When we are spiritually “dirty,” we are prone to irritability, poor decision-making, and a lack of empathy. We become reactive rather than proactive. By engaging in regular spiritual cleansing, we are essentially polishing our Ìwàpẹ̀lé.
We are making sure that our internal environment is hospitable to wisdom, patience, and love. This is the grounded, spirit-led way of living that our ancestors practiced for generations.
Simple Rituals for Energetic Clarity
You do not need elaborate tools or expensive crystals to begin your journey into spiritual hygiene. The most powerful elements are often the simplest ones provided by Mother Earth. Here are a few foundational practices rooted in ancestral wisdom that you can begin today.
1. The Power of Salt: The Universal Neutraliser
Salt is one of the most potent tools for spiritual cleansing. It has the natural ability to absorb and neutralise negative frequencies. If you have had a particularly difficult day at work, a heated argument, or have spent time in a crowded, chaotic environment, a salt bath is your first line of defence.
- How to do it: Add a generous handful of sea salt (or Himalayan salt) to a warm bath. As you soak, close your eyes and visualise the salt pulling the “grey” energy out of your pores and into the water.
- The Intent: Speak to the water. In our tradition, we believe water has memory and consciousness. Ask the water to wash away what no longer serves you. When you drain the tub, imagine all that heaviness going down the plug hole, returning to the earth to be recycled.
2. Sacred Smudging: Clearing the Air
Just as we clean our bodies, we must clean our spaces. Our homes hold the “echoes” of our conversations and moods. If you’ve been feeling stagnant or stuck, the air in your home might be spiritually stagnant too.
- Traditional Herbs: While many people use white sage, I encourage you to explore herbs that resonate with your specific lineage or simple garden herbs like Rosemary or dried Basil.
- The Practice: Light your herb bundle and allow the smoke to waft into the corners of your rooms, under the bed, and around your own body. Use a feather or your hand to direct the smoke.
- The Focus: As the smoke rises, imagine it carrying away the “clutter” of the mind. This is a wonderful way to prepare for prayer or meditation.
3. Working with Floral Waters: Raising Your Vibration
While salt pulls things away, floral waters (like Rose Water or Florida Water) help to bring “cool” and “sweet” energy in. In Yoruba tradition, we value the concept of “Coolness” (Otutu). A cool head and a cool heart lead to wise actions.
- Application: After your salt bath, you can splash a little rose water on your crown, your heart, and your hands.
- The Benefit: This helps to seal your energy field and invites higher, more positive vibrations. It is an act of self-love that affirms your worthiness.
Reclaiming Your Sacred Space
As we move into The Reclaiming phase of spiritual growth, we realise that our energy is our most precious resource. We become more selective about who we let into our space and what environments we frequent. Spiritual hygiene teaches us the “sovereignty of the self.”
When you practice these rituals, you are not just cleaning yourself; you are honouring your ancestors. You are saying, “I value this life and this vessel you have given me.” You are stripping away the “cultural disconnection” that tells us we are just cogs in a machine. You are reclaiming your identity as a divine being having a human experience.
Common Signs You Need a Spiritual Cleanse
It isn’t always obvious when our energy is “muddy.” Here are a few signs that it might be time to reach for the sea salt:
- Unexplained Fatigue: You’ve slept eight hours, but you wake up feeling like you’ve run a marathon.
- Mental Fog: You find it hard to concentrate or make simple decisions.
- Heightened Irritability: Small inconveniences feel like major catastrophes.
- Feeling “Slimy” After Social Interaction: You feel drained or “off” after being around certain people.
- A String of “Bad Luck”: Small things keep going wrong, creating a cycle of frustration.
The Invitation to Alignment
Spiritual hygiene is a lifestyle, not a one-time event. It is a commitment to yourself and your spiritual path. By incorporating these simple Yoruba-inspired practices, you begin to clear the path for your true purpose to emerge. You move from a state of survival into a state of thriving, grounded in the wisdom of those who came before you.
Remember, my dear, you are a sacred vessel. Your peace is your power. When you take the time to clear your energy, you are making room for miracles, for ancestral guidance, and for the fullness of your own light to shine.
