Have you ever felt a sudden, inexplicable pull to turn down a street you have never walked before? Or perhaps you have experienced a quiet, persistent nudge to strike up a conversation with a complete stranger, only to discover later that they held the exact piece of information you had been searching for.
While travelling in Nigeria recently, I had many moments where I felt guided rather than directed. I did not always know why I was being drawn to a particular place, a specific marketplace, or a seemingly random conversation.
Yet, each step seemed to reveal something deeply important about my history, my ancestors, and myself. Looking back, I recognise those moments as examples of Ori at work. It was not loud. It was not dramatic. It was simply a deep inner knowing asking me to trust the next step.
For many Black women and members of the diaspora, life can often feel like walking through a fog. We carry the heavy, invisible weight of intergenerational trauma, cultural disconnection, and the constant pressure to conform to worldviews that do not honour our roots.
We try to think our way out of our problems, relying solely on logic and strategy. However, our traditions teach us that true guidance does not come from the analytical mind alone. It comes from the Ori, the sacred inner divinity and personal destiny that resides within each of us.
Understanding Ori: The Sacred Compass Within
In Yoruba cosmology, Ori is far more than just the physical head on your shoulders. It is your spiritual intuition, your personal spark of the divine, and the keeper of your unique destiny. Before we crossed into this earthly realm, it is believed that we each chose our Ori, selecting the blueprint for the life we were meant to live, the lessons we were meant to learn, and the purpose we were meant to fulfil.
When we are disconnected from our roots, we tend to look outside of ourselves for validation and direction. We seek answers in corporate achievements, societal expectations, or the approval of others. But when you understand Ori, you realise that the ultimate compass is already built into your spirit.
Your Ori is the quiet voice that speaks in the pauses between your thoughts. It is the sudden wave of peace that washes over you when you make a difficult but necessary decision. It is also the discomfort you feel when you are out of alignment with your true self. When we ignore this inner guidance, we begin to experience a profound sense of cultural and spiritual drift, which often manifests as chronic anxiety, a lack of purpose, or a feeling of being fundamentally lost.
The Journey of Returning: The Three Pillars of Spiritual Alignment
Reclaiming your relationship with your Ori is not an overnight event. It is a sacred process of undoing, listening, and remembering. In my work at Fematin958 Intl, we walk through this transformation using three core phases designed to help you heal generational trauma and step into your personal power.
1. The Remembering
The first step is always about looking backward to move forward. The Remembering is the phase where we acknowledge the lack of ancestral connection that many of us have suffered due to systemic displacement and historical fractures.
To connect with your Ori, you must first remember who you are in the grand lineage of your ancestors. You are not an isolated island; you are the continuation of a long, resilient line of women and elders who prayed for your existence. When you begin to study your lineage, honour your ancestors, and hold space for their stories, you clear the spiritual debris that blocks you from hearing your own inner voice.
2. The Unveiling
Once we begin to remember, we enter The Unveiling. This is the stage where we gently but courageously look at the generational trauma and negative patterns that have been passed down through our families.
Many of us carry scripts that do not belong to us. We carry the fear of scarcity, the habit of self-silencing, or the belief that we must suffer to be worthy. The Unveiling allows us to strip away these inherited layers of conditioning. As these heavy burdens are lifted, the true voice of your Ori becomes clearer, louder, and easier to distinguish from the chatter of your fears.
3. The Reclaiming
The final phase is The Reclaiming. This is where you actively choose to live in alignment with your divine feminine power and your spiritual purpose.
Reclaiming means trusting that inner knowing implicitly, just as I had to trust those quiet nudges during my travels in Nigeria. It means stepping into your life with grace, confidence, and clarity, knowing that you are being guided by an intelligence that is older and wiser than your current circumstances.
Practical Ways to Nourish and Align Your Ori
Cultivating a relationship with your Ori requires intention and daily practice. It does not demand elaborate rituals, rather, it asks for your presence, your stillness, and your respect. Here are a few grounded ways you can begin to care for your inner divinity today:
- Practice Intentional Stillness: In our fast-paced modern world, noise blocks intuition. Dedicate ten minutes every morning to sit in absolute silence. Breathe deeply and focus your attention on the centre of your head, simply listening without judgment.
- Speak Words of Affirmation to Your Head: In Yoruba tradition, the physical head is gently touched while speaking words of blessing. You can gently place your hands on your head and declare words of peace, clarity, and alignment over your life. Remind your Ori that you are ready to listen and be guided.
- Pay Attention to Your Synchronicities: Start keeping a journal of the moments when things just seem to fall into place. Note the times you felt a sudden urge to do something that ended up protecting or blessing you. Acknowledging these moments reinforces your trust in your spiritual compass.
- Honour Your Ancestral Roots: Light a candle, pour a simple libation of water, and speak the names of the grandmothers and elders who came before you. Ask them to help clear the path so that your Ori can guide you without interference.
Healing the Collective Diaspora
When a Black woman begins to trust her Ori, the healing ripples outward far beyond her own life. Generational trauma thrives on secrecy, disconnection, and confusion. By choosing to pause, listen, and follow that deep inner knowing, you break the cycle of unconscious suffering for the generations that will follow you. You become the elder you wished you had when you were younger.
My time in Nigeria reminded me that our ancestral wisdom is not confined to history books or museums. It is alive, beating within our hearts, and waiting to be awakened. You do not need to have your entire life mapped out to move forward. You only need to trust the very next step that your inner wisdom reveals to you.
Let go of the need to control every outcome. Allow yourself to be guided rather than directed, and watch how beautifully your story begins to rewrite itself.
