For many of us, there is a quiet, persistent hum that resonates deep within our bones. It is a frequency that speaks of ancient things, of moonlight rituals, of the healing properties of herbs, and of the profound wisdom held by our grandmothers. Yet, for too long, many Black women have been taught to fear this inner resonance.
We have been conditioned to look at our spiritual intensity and our intuitive depth with suspicion, often labeling these divine gifts with words that were never meant to honour us.
Today, we are standing at a sacred crossroads. It is time to peel back the layers of colonial labels and reclaim a power that has been suppressed for centuries. We are entering the season of the Ìyámi Ajé Rebirth.
Understanding the Language of Suppression
In the Western world, the word “witch” has been used as a tool of exclusion and fear. It was a label designed to disempower women who held influence, who healed the community, or who refused to conform to rigid societal norms. For the Black woman, this word carries an even heavier burden.
During the eras of colonisation and the transatlantic slave trade, our indigenous spiritualities were demonised to ensure control. Our sacred practices were driven underground, and our connection to the divine feminine was severed by the imposition of foreign structures.
In the Yoruba tradition, however, we speak of the Ìyámi Ajé. To the uninitiated or those viewing through a colonial lens, this term is often misunderstood or mistranslated. But to those who walk the path of ancestral healing, the Ìyámi represent the “Great Mothers.”
They are the primordial force of the feminine, the owners of the earth, and the custodians of biological and spiritual life. They are not figures of “evil” to be feared, but embodiments of justice, transformation, and the awesome power of the womb.
To reclaim the Ìyámi Ajé within ourselves is to decolonise our spirits. It is a journey of moving away from the shame of being “too much” and stepping into the grace of being exactly who we were created to be.
The Remembering: Awakening the Ancestral Echo
The first phase of our journey is The Remembering. We cannot move forward into our power if we do not know the soil from which we grew. For many Black women, our lineage is a tapestry of both immense strength and profound trauma. We carry the “blood memory” of ancestors who had to hide their power just to survive.
Remembering is about more than just tracing a family tree. It is about tuning your spiritual ears to the whispers of your foremothers. It is about acknowledging that your intuition is not a “hunch,” it is a legacy.
- Honouring the Matriarchs: Think of the women in your line who could “see” things before they happened, or those who could heal a fever with nothing but tea and a prayer.
- Acknowledging the Silence: Recognise where the stories stopped. Where did the fear of “the old ways” begin in your family?
- Reclaiming the Land: Our power is tied to the earth. The Ìyámi are often associated with the birds of the air and the secrets of the soil.
When we remember, we begin to see that our spiritual curiosity is not a rebellion, but a homecoming. We are simply picking up the threads that were dropped a few generations ago.
The Unveiling: Breaking the Chains of Misconception
Once we begin to remember, we move into The Unveiling. This is the phase where we confront the shadows. We must look directly at the ways we have shrunk ourselves to fit into spaces that were never designed to hold our greatness.
One of the most significant challenges Black women face is the “Strong Black Woman” archetype. While it sounds like a compliment, it is often a cage. It demands that we endure pain without complaint and carry the world on our shoulders while denying our need for spiritual nourishment and rest. The Ìyámi Ajé energy is strong, yes, but it is also fluid and restorative.
In this phase, we unveil the truth about our spiritual authority. We must ask ourselves:
- Who told me that my power was dangerous?
- Why am I afraid of my own anger or my own joy?
- In what ways have I traded my authentic spiritual expression for social or religious “respectability”?
Unveiling is an act of spiritual surgery. We are removing the cataracts of colonial thought so we can see ourselves through the eyes of the Divine.
We begin to understand that the “mysterious” or “intense” parts of our personality are actually the seats of our transformative power. When a Black woman stands in her Ìyámi energy, she becomes a catalyst for change in her family and her community.
The Reclaiming: Stepping into Spiritual Authority
The final phase is The Reclaiming. This is where the rebirth happens. This is where we stop asking for permission to be powerful and start living from a place of sacred alignment. Reclaiming the Ìyámi Ajé spirit means embracing your role as a co-creator of your reality.
This power is not about ego or dominance. It is about Ase, the Yoruba concept of the power to make things happen, to produce change. It is the authority to speak healing over your children, to break generational cycles of poverty, and to command peace in your home.
How do we practically reclaim this divine feminine authority?
- Sacred Rituals: Incorporate small acts of mindfulness that honour your spirit. This could be as simple as lighting a candle for your ancestors or sitting in silence with your morning tea.
- Community and Mentorship: We were never meant to walk this path alone. The Ìyámi are a collective. Healing happens in the company of other women who can mirror our light back to us.
- Trusting the “Inner Eye”: Start acting on your intuition without needing external validation. Your spirit knows the way.
By reclaiming this power, we transform the narrative of the Black woman from one of burden-bearer to one of visionary. We become the “Great Mothers” of our own lives, capable of nurturing our dreams and fiercely protecting our peace.
The Call to Global Healing
The rebirth of the Ìyámi Ajé is not just a personal victory, it is a global necessity. When Black women heal, the vibration of the entire planet shifts. We are the carriers of the original spark of humanity, and when we realign with our ancestral wisdom, we bring balance back to a world that has lost its way.
We are moving away from the era of fear and into the era of the Great Awakening. Your spiritual curiosity is the key. Your desire for deeper connection is the map. Do not be afraid of the depth of your soul. Do not be afraid of the fire that burns within you. That fire is not there to consume you; it is there to light the way for those who are still lost in the dark.
This is your invitation to the sanctuary. This is your time to shed the old skin and emerge as the divine, powerful, and spiritually grounded woman you were always meant to be. The ancestors are waiting. The earth is listening. It is time for your rebirth.
