In this fast-paced world, where we are constantly driven by the clock and the clamour of modern life, it is easy to feel adrift. We often find ourselves battling a deep, persistent ache, a subtle sense of lack that no amount of material success can fill.

This feeling, this yearning, is frequently the echo of an ancestral wound, the quiet testament to generations of cultural disconnection and unresolved trauma that rests within our very DNA. It is the spiritual homelessness that comes from forgetting where we truly belong.
At Fematin958 Intl, we believe that the solution is not found in chasing the new, but in reverently returning to the old. It is in the sacred act of turning back, of remembering the wisdom, resilience, and sheer power of those who paved the way for us.
The first tangible, deeply personal step in this journey of healing is creating an ancestral altar: a Living Altar.
Forget the grand, imposing structures you might imagine. An altar is not about material wealth or architectural perfection.
It is, at its heart, an intentional, consecrated space where the living world touches the divine, where the veil between you and your spiritual lineage is made thin. It is an offering of recognition, a declaration that you remember and you honour them.
The Foundation: Intention Over Opulence
The most powerful element of your altar is not the object you place on it, but the focused love and sincerity of your intention. Our ancestors in the African diaspora often had to practise their faith in secret, using the most common of household items to create their sacred spaces. This teaches us a vital lesson: authenticity is the truest currency.
Your altar can be as simple as a clear shelf, a corner of a dresser, or a small table dedicated solely to this purpose. What matters is that it is clean, respected, and kept separate from everyday clutter.
Now, let us walk through the three sacred phases of setting up and engaging with your Living Altar, aligning with the core work we undertake at Fematin958 Intl: The Remembering, The Unveiling, and The Reclaiming.
Phase I: The Remembering (Laying the Foundation)
The beginning of the healing journey is always to acknowledge the truth of our lineage. So many of us, especially Black women navigating the complexities of modern existence, carry the weight of forgotten names and lost stories. The Remembering is the act of anchoring your spirit back into your family line.
Practical Steps for The Remembering
- Choose Your Location: Select a spot in your home that is generally quiet and undisturbed. It should feel peaceful. Many find a discreet corner of a living area or even a dedicated shelf in a bedroom works beautifully. If you live in a small space, a tray or a clean cloth placed only when you engage in your practice is enough.
- Cleanse and Consecrate: Before placing anything, physically clean the space with intent. Wipe it down with a cleaning solution that includes a small amount of Florida Water, rose water, or simply cool, clean tap water, praying as you cleanse: “May this space be purified, blessed, and set aside for the honouring of my highest, most benevolent ancestors.”
- The Foundational Elements (The Four Elements): In keeping with the principles of Yoruba cosmology and African diasporic traditions, we honour the elements that sustain life.
- Water (Spirit/Life): Place a clean, clear glass or bowl of fresh water. Water is a conductor for Spirit, a pathway between the worlds, and represents life itself. Change it regularly to keep the energy fresh and flowing.
- Light/Fire (Clarity/Presence): A simple white candle. The flame serves as a beacon, a light to guide your ancestors to your space, and an offering of clarity and peace. Always use a safe candle holder and never leave a flame unattended.
- Earth (Grounding/Lineage): A beautiful stone, a small dish of soil from your family’s land (if you have access to it), or a potted plant. This element grounds the altar and connects it to the physical reality of the earth from which we all come.
- Air (Communication/Prayer): Incense (like frankincense, sandalwood, or copal) or a feather. The smoke carries your prayers, intentions, and spoken words up to the spirit realm, symbolising communication.
Phase II: Deepening the Connection
Once the foundation is set, we move into The Unveiling, which is the process of peeling back the layers of forgetting to see your ancestors not as distant historical figures, but as living, breathing individuals who hold wisdom for you now.
This is where we acknowledge and address the challenges of inherited trauma and cultural fragmentation.
Practical Steps for The Unveiling
Personal Items and Offerings: The most important objects are those that invite your ancestors by name and personality.
- Photographs: Place photos of your beloved deceased relatives. Do not worry if you do not have photos of every person. A picture of a grandparent, for example, represents their lineage stretching back.
- Heirlooms/Tokens: Include a watch, a piece of jewellery, a recipe card, or an object your ancestor used or loved. These serve as strong energetic anchors.
- Offerings of Nourishment: Our ancestors are still sustained by life. Place small, simple offerings. The most traditional is a small, clean plate of food and a glass of drink from your own meal, dedicated to them before you eat. Offerings should be simple, non-perishable (like a small biscuit or fruit), or something they enjoyed in life, such as a cup of coffee or a favourite sweet. Remove the offering the next day with gratitude.
Speak Their Names: This is a powerful, transformative ritual. Stand at your altar, light the candle, and speak the names of your known ancestors aloud: “I call upon the spirit of [Ancestor’s Name], my Grandfather/Grandmother.
I honour your journey.” Speaking their names helps unveil their presence and invites their protective, supportive energy into your life.
The Petition for Guidance: This is your opportunity to address the residual effects of generational trauma, the feelings of being lost, or the lack of clarity. State your challenge clearly.
For example: “Ancestors, I carry this pattern of [e.g., scarcity/fear/silence]. I ask for your strength, your wisdom, and your healing light to help me break this pattern, so that my children may walk unburdened.”
Phase III: Living in Alignment
The final phase is The Reclaiming: integrating the support and wisdom of your ancestors into your daily life. Your altar is a tool, but the real sacred space is your heart and your purposeful action in the world. This is about stepping fully into your personal power, guided by a clear lineage.
Practical Steps for The Reclaiming
- Consistency is Key: A relationship is built on consistent presence. There is no need for lengthy rituals every day. Simply approaching your altar to light the candle, refresh the water, and say “I honour you” is sufficient. Do this daily, or as often as you can sustain a peaceful practice.
- Journaling and Listening: Sit quietly before your altar. Do not feel pressure to do anything. Just breathe. Keep a journal nearby. Sometimes, the clearest guidance comes as a sudden memory, a feeling of peace, or a strong, intuitive thought that bubbles up in that quiet space. Your ancestors speak in the language of subtle knowing.
- Expanding the Circle: You do not need to know every name in your lineage. You can call upon the “Elevated Ancestors of My Bloodline,” or the “Benevolent Spiritual Ancestors” who wish to guide and protect you. This act of calling is a reclamation of the divine feminine and masculine energies that flow through your veins.
Your Living Altar will become your sanctuary, a sacred anchor in the chaos. It is the place where you commit to not only healing yourself, but to being the chain-breaker, the bridge-builder, and the spiritual liberator for the seven generations who come after you.
By choosing intention over extravagance and cultivating a heart of reverence, you are not just building furniture, you are building a legacy. You are strengthening the spiritual wires that connect you to the powerful, resilient spirit of our people.
May you walk in the light of your Ancestors, beloved. May their wisdom be your guide.
