Have you ever looked at a photograph of an ancestor, perhaps a grandmother or a great-aunt you never met, and felt a sudden, inexplicable wave of emotion? Or maybe you have noticed patterns in your own life, such as an undercurrent of anxiety, a persistent fear of scarcity, or a tendency to quiet your own voice, that do not seem to belong to your personal experiences alone.
Many of us carry burdens that were packed into our emotional luggage long before we were born. In modern psychology, this is known as intergenerational trauma. It is the concept that trauma can be passed down from generation to generation, embedding itself in our emotional, psychological, and even biological frameworks.
Epigenetic research, such as the landmark studies led by Dr Rachel Yehuda, reveals that severe stress can leave chemical markers on our DNA, influencing how future generations respond to adversity.
For Black women, elders, and spiritually curious individuals across the African diaspora, this scientific reality is something our spirits have always understood. Centuries of systemic displacement, cultural disconnection, and forced assimilation have fractured our connection to our roots. Yet, the medicine we need to heal these historical wounds is not new. It has been waiting for us in the spiritual traditions of our ancestors.
In Yoruba cosmology, the practice of ancestor veneration, known broadly through the concept of Egungun, offers a profound, time-tested framework for addressing this trauma.
Far from being a relic of the past, Egungun is a living, breathing sanctuary. It is a sacred system of appeasing, honoring, and communicating with those who walked before us to seek their protection, guidance, and healing intervention.
Phase One: The Remembering
The journey to ancestral healing always begins with a choice to look backward with love and curiosity. I call this initial phase The Remembering.
Many of us grow up experiencing a profound sense of cultural disconnection. We are taught to look at our history through the lens of pain, starting and ending with the trauma of the diaspora. When we view our lineage solely through the lens of oppression, we inadvertently cut ourselves off from the reservoir of power, joy, and spiritual mastery that sustained our ancestors.
Remembering is about shifting our gaze. It requires us to acknowledge that we do not come from a broken people; we come from a resilient people who survived the unimaginable.
In Yoruba tradition, the ancestors are not dead and gone. They exist in a parallel spiritual realm, Ara Orun (the heavenly realm), and they remain deeply invested in the well-being of their living descendants.
When you look at the vibrant, layered textiles of an Egungun masquerade, you are looking at a physical manifestation of this truth. Each layer of cloth represents a different generation, a different story, and a different prayer. The masquerade moves with power and grace, reminding the community that the ancestors are still walking amongst us, offering a shield of protection.
To begin The Remembering in your daily life, you do not need an elaborate shrine or a master’s degree in theology. You simply need intention.
- Create a space of acknowledgement: Dedicate a small, clean surface in your home to your elevated ancestors. Place photographs of deceased loved ones who brought goodness into the world, or simple symbols that represent your lineage.
- The offering of cool water: In Yoruba practice, water (omi tutu) is used to cool, soothe, and pacify energies. Pouring a glass of fresh water at your ancestral space while speaking the names of your ancestors is a foundational act of veneration. It says, I remember you. I cool your path, and I ask you to cool mine.
- Speak their names aloud: Sound carries vibration. When we speak the names of our ancestors, we call their energy into the room, creating a bridge across time.
Phase Two: The Unveiling
Once we begin to remember, we inevitably come face to face with the shadows. This brings us to the second phase of the healing journey: The Unveiling.
Unveiling is the process of exposing the negative patterns, unhealed wounds, and silent contracts we have inherited from our lineage. It is a space of radical honesty. Trauma that is kept in the dark replicates itself.
For example, a grandmother who had to hide her spiritual gifts to survive may pass down a subconscious fear of being seen to her granddaughter. That granddaughter might find herself constantly playing small, self-sabotaging her career, or feeling terrified of speaking her truth, without ever understanding why.
Through the spiritual lens of Egungun, we understand that some ancestors passed into the spiritual realm carrying unhealed burdens, regrets, or unresolved conflicts. When we practice ancestral veneration, we are not just asking the ancestors to help us; we are also offering our prayers and elevated consciousness to help them evolve and find peace in the realm of the spirit.
Appeasing the ancestors means bringing sweet alignment where there was once discord. It involves rewriting the family narrative.
| Dynamic | The Inherited Trauma Pattern | The Ancestral Healing Shift |
| Communication | Silence, secrets, and unexpressed grief. | Speaking truth with clarity and emotional freedom. |
| Relationships | Co-dependency, survival-based partnerships. | Sacred unions rooted in mutual respect and safety. |
| Abundance | Scarcity mindset, constant fear of loss. | Reclaiming the divine birthright of ease and flow. |
| Self-Worth | Hyper-independence, over-working to prove value. | Resting in the grace of the divine feminine. |
During The Unveiling, we look at these patterns not with judgment, but with immense compassion. We recognize that our mothers, grandmothers, and aunts did the best they could with the emotional currency they had at the time. By identifying the cycle, we earn the power to break it.
Phase Three: The Reclaiming
The final phase of our spiritual transformation is The Reclaiming. This is where the magic happens. Once the patterns have been remembered and unveiled, we step into our personal power with absolute clarity, grace, and spiritual alignment.
Reclaiming means recognizing that you are the answer to your ancestors’ wildest prayers. Every prayer they whispered in the dark, every tear they shed, and every sacrifice they made was an investment in your existence.
When you heal yourself, you are retroactively healing your entire lineage, backward and forward. You become the transitional character, the one who changes the trajectory of the family tree forever.
In this phase, ancestor veneration transforms from a practice of healing intervention into a source of daily empowerment. You begin to access what I call the “spiritual inheritance.” Just as trauma can be passed down, so can spiritual gifts, resilience, creativity, wisdom, and leadership.
When you sit at your ancestral altar or connect with the spirit of Egungun, you are anchoring yourself in an ancient, unshakeable foundation. You no longer walk through the world as an isolated individual; you walk with an army of benevolent spirits at your back.
This realization fundamentally changes how you carry yourself. Your voice becomes grounded, your boundaries become firm, and your heart opens to receiving the abundance that is rightfully yours.
“We are none of us alone. Even when we feel most isolated, we are surrounded by the cloud of witnesses, the ancestors who survived so that we might thrive.”
Reclaiming your lineage allows you to revive the divine feminine within yourself. It frees you from the exhausting masculine paradigm of constant hustle, survival, and defense. You can finally drop your shoulders, breathe deeply, and trust that you are protected, guided, and deeply loved by the universe and those who came before you.
