The human nervous system is a deeply intelligent, ancient map. It carries the echoes of everything our ancestors survived, just as it carries the potential for our deepest liberation. For so many of us, especially Black women and those navigating the complexities of the diaspora, we have been conditioned to believe that healing is a solitary pursuit. We are taught to be strong, to go inward, and to figure it out alone.
But true healing requires a different kind of medicine.
Recently, I spent six days in Madrid with a group of fellow Ancestral Lineage Healing practitioners. Many of us had known each other online for years, sharing spaces behind screens, but we had never actually met in person. During those sacred days, we prayed together. We sang together, laughed together, wept together, and shared meals. We honoured the ancestors who walked into the room with each of us, and we held space for one another without judgment or expectation.
What struck me most profoundly during this time was how quickly the human body responds to genuine connection.
As the days unfolded, I watched a visible transformation take place in the room. You could see shoulders relaxing. You could hear the rhythm of collective breathing changing, slowing down to a peaceful, shared cadence. Defences that had been held up for decades began softening. It was a beautiful, somatic reminder of a truth we often forget: the nervous system does not heal only through solitude. Sometimes, it heals through belonging.
Understanding the Weight of Carrying It All
When we look at the challenges facing Black women and elders today, the themes of generational trauma and cultural disconnection consistently rise to the surface. We carry the weight of historical burdens, the grief of forgotten lineages, and the daily pressures of a world that demands our constant resilience.
This hyper-independence is not just a personality trait; it is a survival mechanism. When the world around you does not feel safe, your nervous system adapts by going into a state of high alert. You learn to rely solely on yourself.
In Yoruba cosmology, we understand that we are never truly alone. We are connected to a vast network of ancestors, unseen guides, and the living community around us. When we isolate ourselves in our pain, we sever the connection to this vital life force. The ache so many feel is not just a lack of superficial friendship; it is a profound lack of ancestral and communal connection.
Our bodies know the difference between being isolated and being held. Solitude has its place in spiritual practice, but it cannot replace the medicine of being witnessed, validated, and loved by a community that understands your language, your history, and your spirit.
The Three Phases of Healing: From Isolation to Alignment
To move from the exhaustion of holding it all together to the peace of communal belonging, we must journey through a deliberate process of transformation. In my work at Fematin958 Intl, this journey unfolds across three core phases that mirror the natural evolution of the soul.
1. The Remembering
The first step in healing our nervous system and reclaiming our lineage is the act of remembering. This is not merely an intellectual exercise; it is a somatic and spiritual awakening. We begin by looking back at where we come from, acknowledging the gaps in our family stories, and listening to the quiet whispers of our ancestors.
During our time in Madrid, the remembering happened through song and prayer. As we invoked the names of those who came before us, the room filled with an ancient presence. We remembered that we are the answers to our ancestors’ prayers.
When you remember your roots, your nervous system begins to realize that it does not have to bear the weight of the world alone. You are backed by generations of wisdom.
2. The Unveiling
Once we begin to remember, we inevitably come face-to-face with the blocks, fears, and inherited traumas that have kept us guarded. This is the phase of the unveiling. It is the moment we strip away the masks of the “strong Black woman” or the detached observer and allow our vulnerability to be seen.
In the company of trusted practitioners, the unveiling felt safe. We wept for the losses of our lineages, and we spoke aloud the pains we had hidden away. When you unveil your truth in a safe container, something miraculous happens: your body realizes it no longer needs to shield itself. The tension in the shoulders melts away, and the breath deepens. You realize that your vulnerability is not a weakness, but the very gateway to your power.
3. The Reclaiming
The final phase of the journey is the reclaiming. This is where we step fully into our divine feminine power, our spiritual authority, and our right to belong. We reclaim the rituals, the stories, and the joy that are our birthright.
Reclaiming is a collective act. In Madrid, as we shared meals and laughed until our sides ached, we were reclaiming joy as a sacred necessity. We were rewriting the narrative that healing must always be heavy and painful. By anchoring ourselves in community, we reclaimed our place in the circle of humanity and spirit.
Cultivating Spaces of True Belonging
How do we bring this medicine of belonging into our everyday lives? It begins with a willingness to step out of isolation and seek out spaces that honor your full self. Here are a few ways to start fostering this connection within your own life:
- Create Sacred Altars: Dedicate a space in your home to your ancestors. Fill it with photographs, water, and items that connect you to your heritage. This acts as a daily visual and spiritual reminder that you are part of a larger lineage.
- Seek Spirit-Led Community: Look for spaces, whether online or in person, where your spiritual curiosity and cultural identity are celebrated, not just tolerated.
- Practice Co-Regulation: Spend time with people whose energy feels grounded and safe. Notice how your body responds to them. Allow yourself to lean into their presence and let your guard down.
- Share Your Stories: Break the silence of generational trauma by sharing your experiences with those who have earned the right to hear them. Storytelling is a traditional African tool for healing and connection.
Our bodies are designed to heal in the presence of others. The nervous system regulates itself through the warmth of a smile, the rhythm of a shared song, and the comfort of knowing you are understood without having to explain yourself.
A Sacred Invitation to Journey Together
The six days I spent in Madrid were a testament to the power of collective healing. We arrived as individuals, carrying our unique burdens and stories, but we left woven together by a shared tapestry of love, ritual, and mutual support. My shoulders are lighter, my breath is deeper, and my commitment to creating these sanctuaries for others is stronger than ever.
If you have been navigating your spiritual journey in isolation, feeling the heavy toll of generational trauma or cultural disconnection, please know that you do not have to walk this path alone. Your healing does not have to be a lonely mountain climb. There is a community waiting to hold space for you, to sing with you, and to help you remember who you truly are.
Let us begin the process of softening your defences, soothing your nervous system, and stepping into your personal power with grace and clarity.
