The Sacred Anchor: Returning to Ourselves in a Fragmented World

As I reflect on my journeys through Nigeria, Uganda, and Spain, three vastly different lands with distinct rhythms, languages, and landscapes, I am continually struck by a singular, profound truth. Beneath the surface of our cultural differences, human beings are longing for the exact same things. We long to belong. We long to be seen. We long to be heard. Most of all, we long to remember who we are and to feel connected to something much greater than themselves.

In our modern, fast-paced world, it is incredibly easy to lose that connection. We become caught up in the demands of daily life, the expectations of society, and the heavy, often unacknowledged burdens of our lineages. We scatter our energy outwards, trying to fit into spaces that were never designed to hold our fullness.

The Sacred Anchor is my response to that universal longing. It is not a physical destination, nor is it a distant goal to be reached. It is a practice. It is a conscious, daily way of returning to ourselves again and again, grounding our spirits in the ancient wisdom that already lives within our bones.

The Burden of Disconnection

Many of the women and elders who come to my sanctuary, Fematin958 Intl, share a common sense of exhaustion. They speak of a persistent feeling of being adrift, as though they are moving through life without a solid foundation. This is not merely everyday stress; it is the manifestation of cultural disconnection and a lack of ancestral connection.

When we are disconnected from our roots, we carry the weight of generational trauma without the tools to heal it. In Yoruba cosmology, we understand that we do not walk through this world alone. We are the continuation of those who came before us. When the bond with our ancestors is ignored or severed, we often find ourselves repeating negative patterns, experiencing unexplainable grief, or feeling a deep, spiritual loneliness.

To heal this rift, we must enter into a deliberate process of restoration. My work is structured around three core phases that guide individuals from the fog of forgetfulness back into the brilliance of their divine purpose. These phases are The Remembering, The Unveiling, and The Reclaiming.

The Remembering: Awakening the Ancestral Bond

The first step in creating your Sacred Anchor is The Remembering. This phase is a gentle yet powerful invitation to explore your lineage and acknowledge the stories, both triumphant and painful, that flow through your bloodline.

Remembering is not about living in the past. It is about bringing consciousness to the present. When I spent time in Nigeria, surrounded by the rich traditions of my heritage, and in Uganda, witnessing the deep resilience of the community, I saw firsthand the power of collective memory. Even in Spain, amidst a different cultural tapestry, the universal human need to honor one’s origins was palpable.

To begin the process of Remembering, we can look at practical ways to invite our ancestors into our daily consciousness:

  • Setting up a dedicated space: Creating a simple, quiet corner in your home with photographs of loved ones who have passed, a bowl of fresh water, and a white candle can serve as a physical anchor for your spiritual practice.
  • Engaging in intentional storytelling: Speaking the names of your ancestors aloud and sharing their stories keeps their memory alive and honors their journeys.
  • Listening in silence: Spending time in quiet meditation, asking your lineage for guidance, and trusting the intuitive thoughts that arise.

By acknowledging our roots, we begin to transform generational trauma into generational wisdom. We realize that the challenges our ancestors faced are not just burdens, but blueprints of resilience that we can draw upon today.

The Unveiling: Shedding the Layers of Conditioning

Once we begin to remember, we naturally enter the second phase, which is The Unveiling. This is the stage where we look closely at the masks we wear and the conditioning we have adopted to survive in a world that often demands our assimilation.

For Black women and spiritually-curious individuals, society frequently dictates who we ought to be. We are told to be strong at the expense of our vulnerability, or to dim our light so as not to make others uncomfortable. The Unveiling is the sacred work of peeling back these layers of expectation to reveal the true essence underneath.

In this phase, we confront the negative patterns that hold us back. We ask ourselves difficult but necessary questions: Whose voice am I listening to? Is this fear truly mine, or does it belong to my mother, my grandfather, or society?

Through spirit-led mentorship and sacred rituals, we create a safe space to grieve the versions of ourselves we created for survival. As we shed these old skins, we make room for our authentic self to breathe. The Unveiling allows us to see our wounds not as sources of shame, but as sacred portals through which our healing and unique medicine can emerge.

The Reclaiming: Stepping Into Divine Power

The final phase of the journey is The Reclaiming. This is where the Sacred Anchor becomes fully integrated into your life. Having remembered your lineage and unveiled your true self, you now step into your personal power, your purpose, and your spiritual authority with absolute clarity and grace.

Reclaiming is an active, joyful celebration of the divine feminine and ancestral wisdom. It means living your life from a place of alignment, where your daily actions reflect your deepest spiritual values. It means trusting your inner voice, setting healthy boundaries, and honoring your mind, body, and spirit as a living temple.

When you are anchored in this way, you become unshakable. The storms of life will still come, the world will continue to be turbulent, but you will no longer be tossed around by the wind. You will know exactly who you are, whose you are, and what you came to this earth to do.

Practical Rituals for Daily Alignment

The Sacred Anchor is maintained through small, consistent rituals that ground your energy. Here are a few accessible practices rooted in African diasporic traditions that you can incorporate into your routine to stay connected:

  • Morning Libations: Pouring a small amount of clean water onto a potted plant or the earth outside while offering words of gratitude to the Creator and your benevolent ancestors. This simple act aligns your day with a spirit of reverence.
  • Breath and Grounding: Standing barefoot on the earth or floor, taking deep, conscious breaths, and visualizing roots extending from your feet deep into the ground. This helps to discharge excess anxiety and bring your awareness back to the present moment.
  • Journaling for Clarity: Writing down your thoughts, fears, and insights without judgment. Ask your higher self or your ancestors a specific question, and allow your pen to flow freely with the answers.

These practices are not rigid rules; they are loving invitations to pause, breathe, and remember your sacred nature.

An Invitation to Your Healing Journey

No matter where you find yourself in the world today, and no matter how disconnected you may feel, please know that your anchor is always within reach. The longing you feel to belong, to be seen, and to be heard is actually your soul calling you home to yourself.

You do not have to carry the heavy weight of the past alone. You do not have to figure out the path forward in isolation. Your ancestors are waiting to support you, and your divine purpose is waiting to be fully expressed. It is time to step out of the shadows of generational exhaustion and into the light of your true spiritual power.

Let us embark on this sacred journey of transformation together.
