Beyond Survival: Navigating the Three Phases of Ancestral Healing and Spiritual Wholeness

During one of my recent visits to Nigeria, I found myself being led to places filled with stories. These were places where history, memory, and ancestry seemed alive in the very dust and trees. I met people carrying enormous burdens while continuing to show extraordinary resilience. What struck me most was how many people had normalised their suffering. They kept going simply because they had to. It reminded me how often we mistake survival for wellbeing. Just because we are functioning does not mean we are flourishing.

This realisation stayed with me long after I returned home to the UK. It lives at the heart of the work we do at Fematin958 Intl. As Black women, elders, and spiritually-curious individuals, we are often praised for our strength. We are told that our ability to weather storms is our greatest asset. Yet, when we look beneath the surface, that strength is often a shield hiding deep, unresolved intergenerational trauma.

True healing requires us to lay down the shield of survival and step into the light of true wellbeing. To do this, we must embark on a sacred journey of transformation, navigating the three core phases of spiritual alignment: The Remembering, The Unveiling, and The Reclaiming.

Phase One: The Remembering

The first step away from mere survival is what I call The Remembering. Many of us suffer from a profound sense of cultural and spiritual disconnection. We live our lives cut off from the roots that are meant to feed us. In Yoruba cosmology, we understand that we do not walk this earth alone. We are the continuation of those who came before us.

When we forget our ancestors, we also forget the map they left behind for our healing. The Remembering is an invitation to look backward so that we can move forward with clarity. It is about acknowledging that the heavy burdens we carry, such as anxiety, unexplained grief, or a constant sense of lack, may not even belong to us. They are often inherited patterns passed down through our lineage.

To begin the process of Remembering, we can look at simple, daily practices:

  • Setting up a sacred space: Create a quiet corner in your home dedicated to reflection, prayer, and connection with your lineage.
  • Engaging with oral history: Speak to your elders, ask questions about those who came before, and preserve the stories of your family.
  • Mindful stillness: Spend time in nature, connecting with the earth, and listening to the quiet whispers of your inner wisdom.

By actively remembering, we start to bridge the gap created by historical disruption and cultural disconnection. We begin to understand that our lives are part of a much larger, sacred tapestry.

Phase Two: The Unveiling

Once we begin to remember, we naturally enter the second phase: The Unveiling. This is where the real, often uncomfortable work of healing generational trauma takes place. It is the moment we stop normalising our suffering and choose to look at it directly.

In our communities, survival strategies have been passed down just like family recipes. We have learned to suppress our emotions, to overwork, and to tolerate toxic environments because our ancestors had to do so to stay alive. While these coping mechanisms served a purpose in the past, they now keep us trapped in a cycle of functioning without ever truly living.

The Unveiling is about stripping away these heavy layers. It is a process of sacred honesty where we identify the negative patterns holding us back.

Breaking the Silence

Generational trauma thrives in secrecy and silence. When we refuse to speak about the pain in our families, we allow it to grow. Unveiling requires us to have courageous conversations with ourselves and, where possible, with our loved ones. It means admitting that we are tired of just getting by.

During this phase, we look closely at our emotional habits. Do you find yourself constantly waiting for the other shoe to drop? Do you struggle to accept love and ease? These are signs of a nervous system trapped in a survival loop. Unveiling allows us to witness these patterns without judgment, offering them up to the divine feminine for healing and transformation.

Phase Three: The Reclaiming

After we have remembered our roots and unveiled our wounds, we arrive at the final, triumphant phase: The Reclaiming. This is where we step fully into our personal power, spiritual mentorship, and divine purpose.

Reclaiming means rewriting the narrative of our lives. We take the raw material of our history, the survival and the struggle, and we transform it into wisdom, grace, and leadership. We no longer allow our past or our ancestors’ past to dictate our future. Instead, we use our ancestral connection as a source of immense power.

In Yoruba tradition, the concept of Ase represents our power to make things happen, to manifest our reality through our words and intentions. When you reach the phase of Reclaiming, you activate your Ase. You begin to build a life rooted in joy, abundance, and spiritual alignment.

  • You reclaim your voice: You speak your truth with confidence and clarity, no longer shrinking to make others comfortable.
  • You reclaim your rest: You understand that rest is not a reward for overworking, but a sacred right and a radical act of self-care.
  • You reclaim your joy: You allow yourself to flourish, knowing that your joy honors the ancestors who could only dream of such freedom.

Moving Beyond Survival

My time in Nigeria was a beautiful, sobering reminder that resilience alone is not enough. We were not created merely to endure hard times. We were created to thrive, to create beauty, and to live in deep alignment with our spiritual purpose.

The journey from survival to flourishing is not one we have to walk alone. It is a path best traveled in community, guided by sacred rituals, storytelling, and professional spiritual mentorship. By choosing to heal your own life, you actively heal the timeline behind you and create a lighter, more beautiful path for the generations yet to come.

It is time to stop normalising the struggle. It is time to peel back the layers of generational trauma and claim the vibrant, spirit-led life that is your birthright. The ancestors are waiting, and the invitation is open.
