The Breath of the Ancestors: Healing the Spirit Through the Ancient Art of Sisi

The air we breathe is more than just oxygen and nitrogen. In our Yoruba tradition and across many African diasporic cultures, breath is the carrier of Asé, the divine energy that makes things happen. When we are stressed, disconnected, or carrying the heavy weight of intergenerational trauma, our breath becomes shallow.

We stop drawing from the deep well of our heritage, and we begin to wither. Today, I want to talk to you about a simple yet profound healing practice that our mothers and grandmothers used to restore balance: the art of Sisi, or medicinal inhalation.

As the founder of Fematin958 Intl, my mission is to walk with you through the sacred journey of ancestral healing. Whether you are a Black woman navigating the pressures of a modern world that often feels alien, or a spiritually-curious individual looking to reconnect with your roots, the practice of Sisi offers a grounded, sensory gateway back to yourself.

It is a physical act that mirrors the spiritual work we do in my programme: The Remembering, The Unveiling, and The Reclaiming.

The Wisdom in the Vapour

In our modern lives, we are often taught to look for healing in a pill or a complex, expensive procedure. But our ancestors knew that the earth provides everything we need. Sisi involves sniffing or inhaling the medicinal vapours from prepared herbs, barks, or essential oils. It is a direct line to the nervous system and the spirit.

When you inhale the scent of eucalyptus, camphor, or specific traditional preparations, you are not just clearing your sinuses. You are clearing your “inner atmosphere.” Think of it as a spiritual clearing of the cobwebs that gather when we lose touch with our lineage.

Phase One: The Remembering

The first step in any healing journey is The Remembering. We cannot move forward if we do not know where we have come from. Many of us carry “ancestral grief,” a heavy feeling in the chest that we cannot quite name. This is often the result of cultural disconnection and the silencing of our elders’ wisdom.

Using Sisi as a tool for Remembering looks like this:

  • Scent and Memory: Smelling certain herbs can trigger deep, cellular memories. The scent of lemongrass or cloves might remind you of a grandmother’s kitchen or a childhood garden.
  • Breaking the Silence: Respiratory issues are often linked to things left unsaid. By using inhalation to open the airways, we are symbolically telling our bodies that it is safe to speak, safe to breathe, and safe to remember who we are.
  • Honouring the Earth: Sisi requires us to acknowledge the power of plants. This reminds us that we are part of a larger, living ecosystem, a lineage that stretches back to the beginning of time.

Phase Two: The Unveiling

Once we begin to remember, we move into The Unveiling. This is where we look at the patterns of trauma that have been passed down through generations. We peel back the layers of “strength” that we’ve had to wear as armour, which often leaves us feeling brittle and exhausted.

In this phase, Sisi acts as a soothing balm for the nervous system. When we are in a state of high alert (a common symptom of intergenerational trauma), our bodies are stuck in “fight or flight” mode. This constant tension blocks our spiritual receptivity.

Inhaling medicinal vapours allows for a moment of stillness. As the steam rises and the scent fills your senses, the “veil” of daily chaos begins to lift. You are forced to slow down. You are forced to be present. In that presence, clarity emerges. You begin to see the negative patterns for what they are: survival mechanisms that are no longer serving you.

Phase Three: The Reclaiming

Finally, we arrive at The Reclaiming. This is the most empowered stage of the journey. This is where you take the wisdom of your ancestors and the clarity of your unveiled self to build a life of purpose and power.

Reclaiming your health and spirit through Sisi is an act of self-love. It is a declaration that your well-being matters. It is a refusal to be “too busy” to care for your vessel.

When you practice Sisi with intention, you are reclaiming:

  1. Your Vitality: By clearing your respiratory pathways, you allow life force to flow freely through your body.
  2. Your Sovereignty: You are choosing traditional, spirit-led methods over commercialised, soulless alternatives.
  3. Your Connection: You are standing in the long line of women who have used the earth to heal their families for centuries.

The Practicality of Sacred Ritual

I often hear from women who feel that spiritual practice is something that happens “out there” or requires hours of meditation. But Sisi is beautifully practical. You can do it with a simple bowl of hot water and the right medicinal preparations. It is a ritual you can weave into a busy morning or a quiet evening.

The key is the intention behind the breath. As you inhale, imagine you are breathing in the resilience of your ancestors. As you exhale, imagine you are releasing the cultural disconnection and the feeling of “not being enough” that society tries to impose on us.

Why This Matters Now

We are living in a time of great awakening, but also great fatigue. Black women, in particular, often carry the emotional labour of their families and communities. This labour manifests in the body as tension, fatigue, and respiratory issues.

We must return to the sanctuary of our traditions. Fematin958 Intl is that sanctuary for many, a place where we don’t just talk about healing, we feel it in our bones and in our breath. Sisi is a reminder that the medicine is often right under our noses, waiting for us to stop and breathe it in.

A Sacred Invitation

Healing is not a destination; it is a continuous unfolding. It requires us to be brave enough to look at our wounds and compassionate enough to treat them with the wisdom of those who came before us.

If you feel a tug in your spirit, a sense that there is more to your story than what you are currently living, I invite you to explore this path further. Whether it is through the three phases of my programme or simply by starting your own small rituals of breath and scent, the journey back to yourself is the most important one you will ever take.

You do not have to carry the weight of the world on your own. Your ancestors are walking with you, whispering their wisdom in the wind and in the very air you breathe. It is time to listen. It is time to breathe. It is time to reclaim your power.

I am here to support you as you navigate these waters. Let us work together to identify those old, stagnant patterns and transform them into the fuel for your future. You deserve a life of alignment, grace, and deep, restorative breath.
